What is KARA I Do I Do?

I Do I Do is a special single by South Korean girl group KARA, released simultaneously as both their first Japanese special single and second Korean special digital single on July 24, 2024. The release marks the group's first full-scale comeback in approximately a year and eight months following their 2022 album "MOVE AGAIN".

The single exists in multiple format variations. For the Japanese market specifically, the physical album was released in six distinct versions: one Regular edition and five individual Limited editions. The digital release includes four tracks total: "I Do I Do" in both Korean and Japanese versions, alongside B-side track "Hello" presented in both languages as well.

Thematically, the title track conveys a message of happiness based on the symbolic flower language of blue delphinium, a summer flower representing "I will make you happy". The song delivers this hopeful message through KARA's characteristic style while adopting a subdued, dreamy summer sound that represents a departure from their previous energetic releases. The musical approach features breezy, whimsical melodies paired with emotional vocals, creating what has been characterized as a late summer night atmosphere.

The release was distributed by RBW Inc. under license to Kakao Entertainment, with Universal Music LLC handling the Japanese market distribution. Both Korean and Japanese versions run 3 minutes and 16 seconds, while the B-side "Hello" extends to 4 minutes.

Background and Release Information

Announcement and comeback plans

RBW announced KARA's July comeback on June 18, 2024, followed by the group's official announcement of their Japanese special digital single later that same day. The group posted an image teaser on their official SNS channels at midnight KST on June 27, featuring KARA's logo against a blue horizon backdrop. On July 13, Big Boss Entertainment announced that member Gyuri sustained a cheekbone fracture and an orbital fracture requiring surgery, resulting in her hiatus and cancellation of all July schedules.

Pre-release of Hello

KARA unveiled "Hello" as a pre-release track on July 16, 2024 at 6pm KST. The ballad centers on the Korean word "안녕," which signifies both greetings and farewells, conveying themes of reunion and separation. The track incorporates vocals from late member Goo Hara, recorded in Korean before her passing. Originally intended for KARA's fourth studio album "Full Bloom" in September 2013, the song was ultimately excluded from that release. A Japanese-language version later appeared on Goo Hara's solo single "Midnight Queen" in November 2019.

Official release date

The digital single released across various music platforms on July 24, 2024 at 6pm KST.

I Do I Do Music Video and Dance

The music video presents a pastel-focused visual aesthetic that creates a fairytale atmosphere through soft color grading and dreamy cinematography. The production features beach sequences showing the members enjoying summer activities, alongside scenes highlighting individual moments such as member JiYoung writing in her diary. The visual narrative incorporates multiple references to KARA's previous Japanese singles:

  • GO! GO! Summer: Electric fan and beach imagery

  • Jet Coaster Love: Light flashes and disco ball elements during the bridge

  • Bye Bye Days: Diary writing sequences

Additionally, the opening sequence features six butterflies running across the frame, serving as a symbolic reference to KARA's complete lineup. The final chorus showcases an enhanced arrangement with a featured guitarist performing alongside the group, building toward the song's key change.

The choreography was created by Kim Kee Yeoun and Born.B Sunarri from the BornBlack dance team. The dance routine maintains signature KARA movement characteristics while incorporating contemporary elements suited to the song's laid-back tempo. A Japanese-language version of the music video was subsequently produced, featuring the same visual concept with Japanese lyrics.
